Q:
To join, does it matter if I’m male or
female?
A:
As of August 1976, women have been granted membership into
the fraternity of Alpha Kappa Psi. In fact, over half of our chapter’s
current membership is female, so we always encourage both men AND women
to carefully consider what AKPsi has to
offer!
Q: What Types of Activities are
Involved?
A: There are four kinds of activities that our
chapter does –
Professional: These types of events
are the mainstay of our fraternity and largely why we exist. Through
our chapter’s short history, we have been fortunate enough to hear from
successful business people such as Jerry Colangelo and Ron Cole, an
executive with then America West Airlines, which has recently merged
with US Airways. We also host workshops and events that target
professional development; ranging from resume building workshops to
financial planning seminars. We even plan to host a professional
etiquette dinner this coming semester, a tribute to our willingness to
host a broad range of professional
events.
Social:
What would a fraternity be without a little fun, right? It
is at these events that prospective pledges will get the opportunity to
really get to know and interact with our current members. A broad array
of events, such as movie nights, game nights, hiking, and pool parties
are just some of the events that we are planning. We also plan to host
our first annual “brotherhood retreat” later this semester, which will
entail a weekend-long camping trip that will include activities aimed
at building brotherhood and establishing and promoting a common bond
between us!
Philanthropic: Each
semester, we encourage our members and pledges to explore new ways to
aid the Phoenix Area communities. Organizations that we have worked
with include Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and the
City of Glendale, to name a few.
Fundraising/Entrepreneurial
Development: Because our chapter is entirely student run,
the money we raise is used to subsidize our events and day to day
functions. With that said, the success of our chapter is entirely
dependent upon our membership’s propensity to develop, organize, and
execute activities which raise money for our organization. Currently,
the vast majority of our funding comes through work done in conjunction
with the Glendale Arena, as well as our sponsorship
program.
Q: So Why
Should I Become a Member?
A:
When one accepts membership into Alpha Kappa Psi, he or
she becomes a part of an elite network of talented individuals who are
driven to professional and personal success. Our successful network of
alumni have found careers with companies such
as:
The Vanguard Group
USAA
Wells Fargo Bank
Bank One
Temecula Valley Bank (commercial loan specialization)
Pulte Homes
Allied Waste (internal auditing)
Geico
U-Haul
Enterprise
